The Lake District – four lakes, mountains, rock faces and the rural beauty a stone’s throw away from Salzburg – was and is setting for world famous movies (i.e. “The Sound of Music”) and operettas. It is one of Austria’s most beautiful regions. Nevertheless, it is possible to crown the Lakes Tour with a ride up to mount Schafberg with its almost vertical north face visible from afar.

Heading for Lake Fuschlsee, already beyond the border of Salzburg City, we enter the great, scenic foothills of the Northern Alps with lovely villages. Passing by Fuschl Castle, high above the mystic Lake, and operating today as the luxury hotel Schloss Fuschl, you will get to know the location of the headquarters of Red Bull, the world’s leading energy drink. High above St. Gilgen, where W.A. Mozart’s mother was born and his sister lived during her first marriage, we will have a photo stop. You will be impressed by the incredible view over the Lake Wolfgangsee, the surrounding mountains and rock faces.
Then sit back and indulge in the drive through the wonderful scenery along the lake to the beautiful village, St. Wolfgang, well known from movies, operettas and the world famous White Horse Inn. There you can marvel at Michael Pacher’s winged Gothic altar and take some refreshments. Optional boat ride from St. Wolfgang you will go back to St. Gilgen by boat (May 1st until October 26th).
Full with impressions from this outstanding part of Austria, Salzkammergut, you then will get back to Salzburg.
Mount Schafberg
This mountain with its almost vertical north face is visible from afar. An about 6 kilometers ride up on the unique cog wheel mountain railway, built in 1893, is an experience itself. Easily and in comfort you will reach within app. 45 minutes the summit of the mountain (1,783 m) where you can walk around and take refreshments. (The hotel Schafbergspitze is the oldest mountain hotel in Austria, built in 1862.) From the mountain summit you can have the most magnificent 360o panoramic view not only down to the lakes of the Salzkammergut but as far as the Dachstein Massiv, the Bavarian mountains and even lake Chiemsee in Germany.
Especially with fine weather this tour you should not miss.
