The Grossglockner High Alpine Road itself is much more than just a road. It is an internationally acclaimed masterpiece of road construction. A panoramic route connecting the state Salzburg with the state Carinthia, historically it has a special status in the very restricted access to the national park region, Nationalpark Hohe Tauern.
While driving up 48 kilometers with 36 numbered hair pin curves to an altitude of 8435 ft into the very heart of the national park; you will experience the world of alpine meadows, forests, mountains, eternal ice, and spectacular views.
Our first stop will be at Edelweissspitze which provides an unforgettable panoramic view onto more than thirty peaks of 9850 ft plus. After lunch (not included) at the panoramic restaurant we will go farther to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe where eventually you will stand in front of the majestic highest peak with a view to the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps, the Pasterze. There you either can walk around and enjoy nature or learn about the area from The Information Point, the National Park Information Center and a wide-screen multivision show. Optional is a visit to the Swarovski Oberservatory, where the most modern optical devices provide spectacular views. Even Marmots and ibexes can be watched closely.
The way to Grossglockner as well as back to Salzburg will give you a taste of the famous ski regions Gasteinertal and St.Johann/Pongau, Castle Werfen (famous movie location of Where Eagles Dare) and the mountains with the world’s largest Ice Caves.
For sure this Edelweiss-Tour you will not forget.
