HERRENCHIEMSEE PALACE and FRAUENINSEL (Lady’s Island)

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF AN ECCENTRIC WHO WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT ART, ARCHITECTURE AND MUSIC

To enable you to experience the wide fascinating range of the palaces and castles of the Fairy tale King we offer you two tours. One is the eceptional Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Tour (incl. Pilgrimage Church of Wies and Oberammergau).
The other tour is this one which takes you to the beautiful Chiemgau in Bavaria (Germany). We drive through the hilly countryside with the first high mountains of the Alps in the south until we get to lake Chiemsee, the largest lake in Germany, also known as the Bavarian Sea. After some kilometres along the lake we arrive in Prien. From there the boats cast off heading for our destinations: Man’s Island (Herreninsel) and Women’s Island (Fraueninsel) which got their names from the first buildings on them: A monastery on Men’s Island and a nunnery on Women’s Island. You will be given enough time to enjoy the specialities of each island including the delicious food on Women’s Island before we drive back to Salzburg.

Herreninsel (Man’s Island) with Herrenchiemsee Palace

The Herreninsel with the Herrenchiemsee Palace is one of the most sought-after sightseeing destinations in Germany. They represent the almost fulfilled dreams of King Ludwig II. who is sometimes referred to as the Swan King or the Fairy tale King. He is known as an eccentric who was passionate about art, architecture and music. Among his grandiose castle buildings Herrenchiemsee Palace, castle Neuschwanstein and Linderhof are the most famous ones.
Herrenchiemsee is a complex of royal buildings. You either can walk to the royal palace (app. 20 min.) or go by a horse-drawn carriage.
The left over buildings of the former monastery had been rebuilt and became what is now known as the “Old Palace”.
The “New Palace” was intended to be a replica of the palace of Versailles (central section). It is the largest of King Ludwig II. palaces and several parts even surpass Versailles not only because of the technical progress of 200 years (e.g. the Hall of Mirrors and the chandelier of Meissen porcelain, the largest one in the world).
The beautiful gardens are full of fountains, romantic statues and extravagant beings like those known from myths.
The museums document King Ludwig II. life and early death as well as his friendship with the world famous composer Richard Wagner with many memorabilia and exhibits even from Munich Residence. There are also the plans for Herrenchiemsee, Neuschwanstein und Linderhof.

Frauenchiemsee

While the Man’s Island is famous for the Royal Palace the Women’s Island is an insider’s tip. The second largest of the three Islands in Chiemsee (only 300 m wide and 600 m long) is a little unique jewel in Chiemgau: An idyllic place worth a stroll through the old fishing village, along beautiful gardens, a field with flowers and a classic monastic herb garden. No cars will disturb you as they are not allowed on this picturesque Island.
The Benedictine Abbey dates back to 782 with connections to Salzburg since the very beginning (consecrated by Bishop Virgil of Salzburg and given to the Archbishops of Salzburg in 1062). The beautiful separately standing bell tower became the symbol of the whole region of Chiemgau.
The nuns are very famous for their products, especially liqueur, gingerbread and marzipan which they make themselves; also for their hand-sewn lavender pouches.
Allow yourself these hours and follow the dreams of the Fairy tale King.
